As we bid a fond farewell to Fashion Month Fall 2020, it’s time for reflection. Sure, we could harp on how New York Fashion Week isn’t what it was or how the coronavirus impacted Milan Fashion Week , but we’d rather focus on the good stuff. Like all the top trends that came out of the four fashion capitals.
Which trends are sticking around?
There are a few familiar favorites. Quilted coats are in it to win it and two-tone clothing is set to last way beyond spring. Skin will be in as cut-outs are sure to make a statement and off the shoulder will be the neckline of choice once again once the weather cools back down. Victorian Era dressing is still a thing, although to a lesser extent. And the fringe will really be flying.
Are there any new essentials for fall?
Along with some tried-and-true trends, there were several surprising newbies. Brace yourself because harnesses are about to become the new must-have way to keep everything in place. You may need to add a fourth step to those three-piece suits since ties were (almost) everywhere. And big, boxy blazers are no match for the wide variety of belts designed to wrap them up, whether you prefer your belts skinny or extra broad, you’ll be happy with the options out there.
Check out the slideshow above as we reveal the top trends of the Fall 2020 season. We’ll leave it up to you how many you want to work into your fall wardrobe come September.
Top 10 Trends of Fashion Month Fall 2020
Nifty Neckties
Menswear influences reached their peak this season with neckties wrapping up too many looks to count. Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior and Versace (mostly) placed their ties under layered looks, while Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, Kenneth Ize and Redemption let them take center stage. Think ties are too stuffy? Follow Margaret Howell’s lead and wear yours slightly undone and off-center.

Fringe Benefits
Fringe proved popular, although there was no strict way to rock those strands. Boss and Roksanda added some sweeps to suits; Bottega Veneta, Gabriela Hearst, Jonathan Simkhai, Jil Sander and Christian Dior draped dresses in varying levels of fringe. But Prada had the most unique take by accenting shoulders with two layers of strands.

Harnessing the Power of the Harness
Strap in because the harness is back in fashion. While you’re probably thinking this is another one of those things that only works up on the runway, think again. Several brands used them almost like belts or suspenders (Gucci, Junya Watanabe). Then there were the designers that made them look like part of the clothes they covered (Michael Kors Collection, Charlotte Knowles). Then there were the more in-your-face accessories with Alexander McQueen, Vera Wang, Christopher Kane and Richard Malone using them to make more of a statement.

Cropped Jackets
We’ve already filled you in on the rise in popularity of cropped blazers , but now cropped jackets are taking over the trend. Outerwear that hit just above the hips (or way higher like Moschino) was a popular silhouette. Looking for something lightweight? Chanel, Hermes, Isabel Marant, Alberta Ferretti and Longchamp have you covered. Need something more substantial? Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Louis Vuitton offered a little more insulation.

Front and Center Cut-Outs
Cut-outs are nothing new. But instead of restricting them to the sides or back, for Fall 2020 it’s all about making a statement up front. Whether they came via keyhole (Chloe), slit (Koché, Versace, Eckhaus Latta), out to the shoulder (Monse), as part of a strappy neckline (Preen by Thornton Bregazzi) or even a set (Christopher Kane), there was plenty of skin.

Belted Blazers
The days of oversized blazers are over. That’s not to say designers didn’t send any down the Fall 2020 runways, it’s just that all that volume was reined in via belts. And the belts came in all styles and sizes, from knotted tassels to super skinny to belt bags.

Ruffled Collars
Dressing like an extra for a Victorian Era film has been a thing for a while now, but for Fall 2020 designers are feeling a tad more restrained opting for ruffled collars as a subtler nod to the period. The standout collars were expected at more boho and romantic brands like Zimmermann, Chloe, Brock Collection and Rodarte; less so at Tory Burch, Paco Rabanne, Sportmax and Celine.

Split Take
We’ve already covered the two-tone takeover that’s set to dominate spring. But if designers have their way, the reign will last straight through fall. Some split things straight down the middle (Junya Watanabe, Marni, Guy Laroche), while others, like Sacai, JW Anderson, Haider Ackermann, were more subtle. And Chanel just divided things in half.

Show Off Those Shoulders
Despite fall’s often chilly temps, come September everyone will be showing some shoulder. Off-the-shoulder tops, dresses and suits were everywhere, from New York to Paris. It’s all very reminiscent of the still popular move of wearing your coat off your shoulders a la the street style set.

Quilted Coats
Quilting is the fad that just won’t die, but at least for Fall 2020 it was mainly confined to coats. And there were plenty of colors and styles to choose from. Erdem’s bright yellow version really stood out. Balmain’s super structured take came complete with a matching skirt. Etro and Coach 1941 offered shorter silhouettes as Chloe, Salvatore Ferragamo and Jason Wu went the longer route.
