This year has given us many things — and not all of them good. Whether it’s the Kardashian trend machine or an Instagram fashion fling, we were bombarded with trends in 2018. Not to mention all the runway and street style inspo that drove us to spend our hard-earned dollars on stuff we wouldn’t have back in 2017. With 2018 coming to a close, we decided to make a sort of New Year’s resolution list of all the trends we’re kicking to the curb come January 1. And we even threw in some of the trends we wouldn’t mind getting a second wind.

2018 Trends to Ditch

Kick: Bike Shorts
We don’t know whether to place all the blame for the bike shorts takeover on the athleisure push or Kim Kardashian. Either way, when we start getting see-through versions, it’s time to call it quits (unless you’re actually riding a bike).

Kick: Ugly Sneakers
We’re not kicking all kicks to the curb, just those purposefully ugly ones that are like orthopedic shoes for millennials. Instead, how about we opt for classic Adidas, Nike, Puma, Converse and Reebok sneaks in 2019 with maybe a few pairs of Vejas thrown in?

Kick: Tiny Sunglasses
Another trend we can pin on Kim Kardashian (via Kanye West), we’re sick of going slim when it comes to our shades. But that doesn’t mean we have to go all the way across the spectrum to oversized shades. Just pick up some classic Ray-Ban aviators and you’re good to go.

Kick: Beaded Bags
Sure, they’re cute and oh so tiny, but really, how much can you realistically carry in those beaded bags? We’re also anticipating the inevitable fallout when, no matter how well the bag is made, a bead or two falls off and it never sees the light of day again. RIP.

Kick: The 80s
For those of us who actually lived through the decade of excess, experiencing it once was enough. So let’s retire all the shoulder pads and puff sleeves and follow Marc Jacobs’ lead and lean into grunge.

Kick: Larger-Than-Life Hats
Jacquemus gave us creative sun protection with its OTT hats, but we’re kind of hoping they’ll prove to be a one-season wonder. Then we can go back to our trusty (Gucci) baseball caps and bucket hats.

Kick: Sock Boots
Responsible for making our feet sweaty, sticky messes, the sock boot silhouette is officially played out come January 1. We held in there long enough to see Michelle Obama rocking glittery Balenciaga Knife boots so we’re pretty much ready to bid this trend adieu.

Kick: Logomania
One or two logo pieces an outfit is fine, especially since you dropped all that money on Fendi and Gucci, but the head-to-toe logo looks need to be retired. And quickly.

Kick: Bleached Denim
While acid wash never took off, bleached denim has made a comeback. Enjoy it for the next few weeks because our New Year’s resolution is to embrace darker denim.

Kick: Westernwear
Cowboy boots are fun and all, but we’re kind of maxed out on all things Western. The trend may stick around into the first few months of 2019, but we’re hoping it gets put out to pasture soon after.

Keep: Prairie Dresses
We’re opting out of the Western trend, but prairie dresses are the exception. We still like their throw-on-and-go appeal and they’re the perfect winter to spring transition pieces.

Keep: Cardigans
Our one caveat: put away the grandma iterations. We’re thinking more 90s-style cropped cardis to go with all the grunge we’ll be wearing.

There’s something about retina-burning brights that just makes us happy. And it’s a surefire way to make winter less dreary.

Keep: Puffers
Because we like that these bulky coats keep us warm and are still fashion. But keep things in perspective and ditch the ones that are XXXL.

It’s not exactly a warmer weather fabric, but that’s where corded miniskirts come in handy.

Keep: Tie-Dye
While tie-dye has been around for a couple of seasons, we’re still not tired of it (though you should probably check back with us around summer). Especially in unconventional fabrics and silhouettes, the groovy pattern has some staying power.

Still in the midst of our velvet crush, we’d like to see this fabric stick around for spring. Especially in unexpected shades like gold and green.
