When it comes to fall staples, trenches, sweaters and jeans usually spring to mind. But we’re about to advocate for a write-in candidate: khakis. The neutral pants are back in fashion as evidenced by the numerous pairs spotted on the streets during the Spring 2019 shows.
And we’re not talking about your traditional trousers. From elongated pockets to colorful cuffs and deconstructed details, khakis now come in a wide range of silhouettes. Plus, super wide-leg versions are trending. While colors can vary from the lightest beige to a deep brown, they all qualify as neutrals. But that doesn’t mean they’re the easiest look to pull off.
The trick to styling these not-so-classic khakis is to balance your proportions. If the pair you pick boasts roomy legs, pair it with a fitted tee or top. If you favor a slimmer cut, find some that feature a standout accent like an exposed pocket or colored hem, then pair it with a chunky sweater that you can half tuck into your pants.
And don’t be afraid of khaki-on-khaki looks. Think of it as the new double denim and layer a statement trench over neutral slacks for a cohesive yet fashion-forward feel.
Now that you’ve been notified of the khaki renaissance, you need to be properly outfitted. Ahead, 19 decidedly 2018 pairs you’ll want to live in this season.
