We often lament that the see-through trend shows no sign of fading. Peekaboo fabrics are still a staple at everything from film festivals to the Golden Globes to street style. And now, the sheer obsession has extended all the way down to feet.
According to Pinterest (a go-to for reliable fashion predictions), saves for “sheer socks” are up 72 percent. Not surprising after Kendall Jenner rocked nude socks with her scene-stealing Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown at last year’s Cannes International Film Festival. Hailee Steinfeld actually beat Kendall to the punch, stepping out in black net versions at the 2016 edition of Toronto’s annual film fest. Keri Russell’s hot pink sheer socks at a Build Series event were pretty bold, but paired perfectly with her pointy pumps and patterned skirt.
The runways also provided prime viewing for the sheer sock wave. Off-White went slouchy with sheer ivory socks for Fall 2017, using them as a statement accessory on several of skirted looks. That same season, Katie Gallagher raised the bar by incorporating sheer polka dot socks that hit mid-calf.
Fendi offered a variety of sheer socks for Spring 2018, some sporty, some logo-clad. (You may have missed them, though, since everyone was focused on the petrol blue bangs.) Erdem’s socks looked more like shortened stockings, ideal for serving as a subtle base for all the fancy embroidered pumps.
The market is actually flush with sheer socks at the moment, so you have your pick of colors, patterns and whether to go with or without sparkle. While most of these socks are meant to be shown off with pumps or sandals, some feature statement cuffs meant for poking out of boots or sneakers. Whatever your footwear preference, you’re bound to find a sheer sock that fits in our roundup below.
