Certain 90s fashion trends have always seemed more destined to return than others. With chokers, velvet and slip dresses overtaking the streets and the runways, it was only a matter of time before Steve Madden, maker of arguably the most iconic sandal of a decade, claimed his rightful market share.
That time has come. As of yesterday, Steve Madden’s Slinky platform sandals are back. Beloved for their minimalistic vibe, stretchy strap, and chunky, leg-lengthening sole, the slip-ons once graced the feet of every self-respecting Clueless and/or Spice Girls lover who came of age in the 90s and early aughts.
Back then, the platforms came paired with low-rise jeans or capris, butterfly clips and bandana tops. Those who re-adopt the slides ought to follow the same principle — in other words, use them to balance out a head-to-ankle look that’s, ahem, sartorially aggressive. Think of them as substitutes for your go-to black heels.
As Refinery29 notes, the Slinky reboots feature some chic, modern updates: the outer edges have a smoother finish, the soles less slope than the originals (no doubt Madden is aware of the burgeoning flatform trend). Sure the Slinkies tug at our heartstrings, but do we love these more than the flatforms Miu Miu, Stella McCartney and Proenza Schouler recently put out? It’s hard to say. Still, at $69.95, you might as well go ahead and indulge your inner Cool TeenTM.
