We have a love/hate relationship with Snapchat. On the one hand, it invites you to pass your precious time as a voyeur of your friends and aspirational friends. On the other hand, it enables you to be a voyeur of your friends and aspirational friends.
The lure is obvious. Filters aside, Snapchat allows little room for grooming or editing, leaving us with something that feels like a genuine glimpse into the daily life of another human being (even if it is sometimes staged). It’s a gateway into the minds of our favorite celebrities, models, stylists, designers and influencers — and for that we are grateful.
Plus, Snapchat’s mini motion picture content allows would-be fashion outsiders to stay incredibly up to date on the industry’s inner workings, attending exclusive parties, product launches, fashion shows and even Instagirl getaways as a silent, watchful third party. It’s a fount of insider info…if you know which Snapchats to follow.
Therein lies the problem. Nowadays, Instagram’s video feature is closing in on Snapchat’s territory, in part because the tricky little ghost isn’t nearly as user-friendly as its Facebook-owned rival.
