In 1980, New York City threw the working class a curve ball. On April 1, 34,000 members of the Transport Workers Union walked off their jobs in a strike to increase their wages. For 10 days, all subway and bus lines in the five boroughs were brought to a complete standstill, leaving thousands of businessmen and businesswomen stranded. So, how did everyone manage to make it to the office? They did what any respectable New Yorker would do. They walked.
This was the first time in history that women paired suits with sneakers at work. As luck would have it, the sneaker phenomenon outlasted the strike and is still a common sight today on and off the runway.
