Mismatched earrings are the name of the game for spring. Oscar de la Renta packed a one-two punch with color-coordinating gemstones, while Louis Vuitton made us do a double-take with its 60s-inspired mod squad discs. But it was Nina Ricci who really caught our attention. During the show, one model after another strutted down the runway with a motley mix of earrings in varying shapes, sizes and shades.
If you’ve never mixed your earrings at home, it’s easier than it looks. To begin, lay out all your earrings on a flat surface and take stock. Then pair off different earrings in the same color. Don’t worry about shape or size. A matching shade will pull the look together. Another way to combine earrings by color is by using complementary tones: blue and yellow, pink and green, white and black and so on. You can also mix and match by shape. That way you have more wiggle room with color, size and patterns. For example, a long, linear earring with a minimalist aesthetic pairs great with solitary studs and pearls. And finally, have a little fun with size. If you have two similar shapes, like hoops, pair up a smaller version with a larger one. It’s that simple. But, hey, if all else fails, go shopping! There are plenty of brands that sell beautiful pre-selected mismatched earrings so you can get the same result with half the work.
