Trend #1: Flutter Sleeves

Miss: Mischa Barton was spotted leaving Whiskey Mist nightclub looking a little dazed and confused—maybe because she’s not sure how she ended up in this unfortunate dress. The fluttery sleeves, embellished cuffs and asymmetrical hem all contributed to the awkwardness of the outfit which didn’t flatter the actress’ figure and seemed like a very odd choice for a night of clubbing.
Hit: Cate Blanchett’s look at a party celebrating the summer issue of Gotham Magazine was as unique as the covergirl herself—the actress earned nods from Vogue’s best dressed list because of her directional but not overly sartorial outfit. Blanchett’s Givenchy dress and clutch featured a double-take-inducing shape and of-the-moment pattern, and her Roger Vivier sandals were the perfect styling choice.
Trend #2: Suiting Up

Miss: As she headed to the studio for rehearsals with No Doubt for their upcoming album, Gwen Stefani definitely caught my eye—but not in a good way. The all-over leopard pattern resulted in a look that was too costumey; I’d like to see just one or two of the leopard pieces paired with a neutral to tone this look down just a notch. The biggest question I have about this look, though, is how she even got out the door with this much on during the recent Manhattan heat wave.
Hit: Rachel Bilson did summer suiting to a T at the Television Critic’s Association summer party. The Hart of Dixie actress looked chic in a tuxedo-inspired Malene Birger sleeveless blouse paired perfectly with Alexander McQueen peplum pants and cream-colored pumps.
Trend #3: Sparkles

Miss: Rule #1 of red (or purple) carpet fashion? Don’t match the floors. Hayden Panettiere did that and more at the Teen Choice Awards, wearing a purple sequin dress by Zuhair Murad and a matchy-matchy pair of sparkly purple pumps. Overall, the look was too Teen Choice Barbie and could’ve used a good dose of subtlety.
Hit: At the Sports for Peace event celebrating Muhamad Ali, Rosario Dawson went the opposite direction of Panettiere, choosing a black beaded gown that had all the glitz without the garishness. The actress did well by staying in a monochrome color palette but restricting the sparkle to one piece.
