Trend #1: Sheer on Top

Miss: Nicky Hilton’s been on a roll with leather Valentino looks (she wore a black leather mini dress to the store opening in L.A. and a lace and leather dress during Fall Fashion Week) but it looks like the third time isn’t the charm after all. The sheer lace top and leather skirt ensemble that the socialite wore to the designer’s latest show left a bit to be desired—like a top. With the collar, puffed sleeves, body-conscious fit and overexposure, there was just too much going on with this outfit, and Hilton’s racoonish eye makeup didn’t help.
Hit: Kim Kardashian boasted just the right amount of sheer in the black lacy Valentino dress she wore while arriving to the show with boyfriend Kanye West. She made the right choice to wear nude underneath, avoiding the bra-baring raciness of Hilton’s look. I love the way the fluttery sleeve creates a strong shoulder without bulk.
Trend #2: Mesh Stripes

Miss: I definitely don’t hate Olivia Palermo‘s lacy striped Pepto-Bismol-pink dress (and she did the right thing by wearing nude underneath rather than going nude like the models on the runway) but the composition of the outfit killed the effect. The way she belted the tiered skirt ruined the dress’ frothy shape, and her cat-eye glasses and sparkly heels were distracting. I would love to see her redo this dress, unbelted, with simple accessories.
Hit: What Olivia Palermo’s outfit had in look-at-me loudness, Leslie Mann‘s dress had in nuance. Lately, Valentino has been all about playing with sheer and lace illusions, and the stripes on the frock that the actress wore to the designer’s show were an even more subtle way of creating this effect than the sheer tops worn by Kim and Nicky. Mann’s embellished opal dress with sheer stripes was pure elegance, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kate Middleton in something similar.
Trend #3: Skater Dress

Miss: Earlier in the week at Chanel, Diane Kruger wore a denim dress with a skater silhouette. The dress looked positively dreamy on her, and her metallic clutch and spiked Louboutin flats were chic, but she absolutely spoiled the look with her black newsboy cap.
Hit: Celebrities can’t get enough of fit-and-flare dresses this season, and I can’t get enough of the one Clemence Poesy wore while sitting front row at Valentino. The simple red dress was Parisian chic in a way that the French actress does best. I love that she went mostly minimal with her shoe choice and smooth ponytail but then threw a studded Chanel clutch to shake things up. Most of all, I love that there was no newsboy cap.
