Style Showdown: Emma Stone’s Flowery Frocks and Three Celebs in Red Suits

Trend #1: Flowered Dress with Sleeves

Miss: Emma Stone has been a whirlwind of envy-worthy ensembles on her promotional tour for The Amazing Spider-Man, but the flowered dress that she donned for the Spanish premiere in Madrid just left my head spinning. The dress may be Dolce & Gabbana, but the shoulder pads, upholstery-like needlepoint flowers, and lace make it look like Emma Stone took a trip back to the 80s—and not in a good way.

Hit: The actress returned to her usual pitch-perfect fashion sense at the Hollywood premiere, wearing a charming white Chanel dress. The look made use of similar elements—embroidered blossoms, touches of froth—but brought them together in a more tempered and modern way. I love the structured shape of the skirt and square neckline and the lines created by the appliqués.

Trend #2: Scarlet Suits

Miss: Australian actress Donna Air looked like a Christmas package in the metallic red and magenta striped short suit she wore to the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party in Hyde Park. The outfit seemed inspired by the electric blue H&M shorts suit that Amanda Seyfried wore to the In Time premiere last fall, but took the look over the top with clear plastic kiss sandals and the shorts’ awkward length.

Hits: There were too many red suits this week to choose just two—if Donna Air’s look was bad, Blake Lively and Rihanna tie for “better” and “best”. The Michael Kors suit that Lively wore for an appearance on Good Morning America was on-trend with its look-at-me color, but overall felt a bit vanilla. Comparatively, Rihanna’s quirky Acne suit (which was also spotted on Hanneli Mustaparta) was a little off-the-wall but was a welcome departure from the fishnet shorts and baggy denim jumpsuits she’s been wearing lately. I love the way the look played with the menswear and sporty trends at the same time.

Trend #3: Art Deco

It’s a Tie: The look on the Savages red carpet was all art deco. Blake Lively’s gorgeous Zuhair Murad gown fit her like a dream and oozed Hollywood glamour. The art deco-inspired nude and black beading accentuated the actress’ knock-out figure. Salma Hayek also stunned in art deco beading, wearing a teal Gucci gown which draped beautifully and made me green with envy.
