Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ’em how it’s done. Here’s a look at celebrity hits and misses, from Alexa Chung’s frilly lederhosen and Jennifer Hudson’s witchy wardrobe to Kate Moss as a maiden and Clemence Poesy in rich ruffles.

Miss: It may not have seemed possible, but Alexa Chung has indeed made it onto the dreaded left hand panel of this list—it seems her unique fashion confidence may have gotten the best of her at the Chanel Haute Couture show in Paris. Perhaps she got her fashion weeks mixed up and thought she was in Berlin, because the Chanel minidress with layers of ruffled sleeves and dangling ribbon adornments looked dangerously like some kind of haute couture lederhosen.
Hit: At the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in London, Clemence Poesy rocked the ruffled look in a white chiffon backless dress by Nina Ricci, and black wedge platforms with a bow detail by the same designer. Her simple styling was on-point and the dress’ ruffles were whimsical without being overwhelming.
Trend: Boots and Vintage Dress

Miss: Harry Potter actress Natalia Tena might have been reacting to a glimpse of herself in the mirror in this photo; her inexplicable pairing of a floral dress with cowboy boots and an orange feather hair accessory is pretty screamworthy. The vintage-inspired dress with a train would’ve passed on its own, which goes to show the potential power of accessories as outfit-ruiners.
Hit: At the rehearsal dinner for her wedding to Jamie Hitch, Kate Moss showed that wearing a quirky dress with boots doesn’t necessarily result in mayhem like Tena’s. Moss looked like a maiden out of a fairy tale in a blue vintage dress with bell sleeves and Tabitha Simmons teal suede boots.

Miss: Jennifer Hudson doesn’t usually do wrong, but her outfit at the Essence Music Festival fell as flat as her wilted curls. The asymmetrical hem made her already-blah LBD look unfinished, and her addition of orange platforms and fishnets gave this ensemble a witchy look that belonged on the Harry Potter red carpet.
Hit: Anne Hathaway has been rolling out some competition to the runway looks at Paris Haute Couture week, including this lovely white lace Valentino dress. Her Versace sunglasses and poppy-colored pumps made this summery outfit effortlessly cool.
