Forum Members Review the Fall 2024 Haute Couture Collection of Jean Paul Gaultier, with Nicolas di Felice as Guest Couturier

Yesterday a little after 18:30pm (Paris time), one of the most highly-anticipated events on the Fall 2024 schedule for Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week took place. For anyone that wasn’t aware, Jean Paul Gaultier announced Nicolas di Felice (of Courrèges) as his seventh guest couturier back in March, picking up from where Simone Rocha left off. The fashion pack descended upon the Jean Paul Gaultier headquarters on Rue Saint-Martin, which was turned stark white, boasting an incredibly narrow runway and complete with five rows of jam-packed seats (filled by everyone from Catherine Deneuve to Miss Fame). First down the runway came an all-black draped trench coat dress with an oversized collar and veil that covered the model from the eyes down. Looks to follow were a minimalist take on signature house code of Jean Paul Gaultuer (such as corsetry and lingerie detailing). To close out the collection, Di Felice’s finale number consisted of a sheer nude wedding gown-style dress that was covered in 10,568 hook and eye closures.

“Hmm… not sure how to feel about this collection yet. It started out really well then it felt like a Courrèges redux. I was really rooting for him but it left me a bit cold.” [thiago]

“Annoying music. It was good as a RTW Jean Paul Gaultier x Courrèges runway but not couture.” [tourbillions]

“Some of it is quite chic, but I feel like I’ve seen so much of this elsewhere before (Hussein Chalayan, Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens, even Versace). Some of it is quite dated, especially the short dresses (very mid-2010s Mugler).” [Kennnnn]

“This is Mugler by Nicola Formichetti from 4 years ago.” [TomBlanksFullFatMiuMiu]

“I LOOOOOOOOVED IT. I could’ve used a bit more drama, maybe. But, the sense of restraint. The color story, the concept of under garments and the delicate use of coverage and exposure- what a balance. Obsessed with the runway soundtrack.” [jeremydante]

“My favorite collection of the week. The collection was so sleek and elegant. The reduced color palettes, the leather, the hook-and-eyes, the pockets, the overall rigor and willowy silhouettes, I love it.” [LadyJunon]

“Great show and, great collection. As expected he delivered.” [THD96]

“I knew Nicolas Di Felice had it in him. Wow!” [Alquimista]
