MUI MUI F/W 2010

There was a sixties mod feel to the Fall/Winter 2010 Miuccia Prada-designed Miu Miu collection, which came complete with popping orange and purple, petite bows, gorgeous sculpted collars, big undulating almost ruffle-like details, appliqué, and the ballooning tent-shaped mini silhouette that Twiggy was once so famously photographed in.

The brand’s signature embroidery and appliqué accented a number of the looks – notably black otherwise monochromatic ones – but the accents were light, romantic and restrained for the most part (i.e. just the straps of a top or the bodice of a dress were in the shape of florettes).

Like the Prada collection before it, this season’s Miu Miu collection seemed intent on showing wearable day and evening wear. Unlike Prada, Miu Miu is aimed at a slighted edgier, more adventurous demographic making for a few bolder pieces in the mix. Among them, a purple lace dress, belted at the waist, and with a black bodice detailing topped with flowers drawing your eyes to the model’s bust.

Wearable for Miu Miu is indeed a lot less broad than it is for Prada, and many find it difficult to pull off the brand’s fashions because the cuts tent to only flatter a very specific kind of silhouette. However, the accessories work, making them a perennial favorite, often more covetable than those from Prada.

This season, the florettes that topped many garments also made their way onto some of the handbags, covering them in an almost over-the-top clownish way (there was almost a Murakami/Louis Vuitton feel), restrained only by the fact that they were nearly all-black and very precisely cut. The flower details were on the shoes as well, making for what was perhaps the boldest parts of the collection.

The shoes were almost couture-like, with contrasting silhouettes in their design, and craftsmanship (ballooning at the top, slender and cut straight at the front with a bow at the tip, for example). Who knew Miu Miu could give Balenciaga a run for their money when it comes to intricate, futuristic shoes?
