Coco Chanel (née Gabrielle) has inspired many an iconic handbag and fragrance, most of which go by her sweet, two-syllable nickname. However, her fashion house’s new It bag — and “abstract floral” fragrance — will take its founder’s given name. Today, Chanel released the details of its forthcoming Gabrielle line, the brand’s first (major) new bag model since 2011’s Boy. The range features quilted, chain-strapped shoulder bags and bucket-shaped mini backpacks done in classic black lambskin, exotic leathers and a range of colors. The accessories are slated to hit stores this spring — some styles as early as March. (Music to the ears of fashion girls who’ve been salivating over the bags since they made their runway debut at
Chanel’s Spring 2017 data center.) In not-so-happy news, the covetable arm candies will cost between $3,000 and $33,000, depending on make and material.
“Gabrielle is not just a simple name: it’s an invitation to all women to fulfill themselves, to have faith in who they are and to listen to their own voice,” wrote the brand in a press release. Chanel is not blind to the effect the current political climate has had on denizens of the fashion world. In keeping with the general “
We Should All Be Feminists” spirit of things, the brand accompanied its launch news with a video entitled
Gabrielle, A Rebel At Heart. The 18th installment of the brand’s popular “Inside Chanel” series and the first of four episodes that will focus on Gabrielle Chanel,
Rebel At Heart explains how the designer-commonly-known-as-Coco’s life “can be summed up in three verbs: to choose, to desire and to be.” Stay tuned for videos that will cover the themes of freedom, passion and allure as well as a Kristen Stewart-, Pharrell-, Cara Delevingne- and Caroline de Magret-fronted Gabrielle campaign. (Shot by Karl Lagerfeld, dropping April 3.)
