Each February, New York Fashion Week kicks off with a celebrity runway show that brings attention to a very real issue: heart disease in women. Hosted by Katie Holmes and presented by Macy’s, this year’s American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women™ Red Dress Collection featured 15 celebrities wearing red dresses from top fashion designers. And for the first time ever, heart disease survivors walked alongside the celebrities on the runway.
Despite the upbeat, celebratory feel of the show, the event is held to remind women of the need to protect their heart health. According to the AHA, cardiovascular diseases cause one in three deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. However, 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. The most important action is to know your numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI) — it could save your life.
