Milan Fashion Week was off to a fine start with Alessandro Michele’s collection for Gucci generating a huge amount of buzz on our forums and Miuccia Prada getting her mojo back with the unveiling of her “clever, fun, attractive” Spring 2017 Prada collection. Yet with the good comes the bad and here at theFashionSpot, we don’t hold back. Whether the shows were declared fantastic or a downright failure, Milan Fashion Week has been far from uneventful. Modeling legend Lauren Hutton walked the runway alongside Gigi Hadid (fabulously clutching the exact same bag she carried in the 80s movie American Gigolo ) for Bottega Veneta’s 50th-anniversary show spectacular, while we are left shaking our heads over Dolce & Gabbana’s “dated and boring” collection. Read on for our take on the hits and misses at Milan Fashion Week.
MFW Hits & Misses (1)
HIT: Ermanno Scervino
"Beautiful, elegant, with a touch of youthful flirtatiousness to give it a more contemporary edge. I love that there are still designers like this one that just churn-out beautiful, sophisticated, no nonsense clothes! They don't have to be so edgy and attempt to make a statement. They're like palate cleansers during this whole circus of a month!" [ToniOrtega ]
"Pure love!" [khyrk ]
"Thought this was such a wonderful, sophisticated and wearable collection. The colour palette is beautiful and very season appropriate." [vogue28 ]

MISS: Fausto Puglisi
"What an eyesore, and the cast is even worse. This collection looks like it's his regular stuff ('inspired' by Versace) mixed with some Givenchy." [perhydrol ]
"Normally I'm a fan of Fausto's, but I'm not in love with this, and I think the elaborate prints are a big part of it. Normally I love his vivid color blocking and really simple, graphic patterns, but this ends up feeling both too busy and not quite grandiose enough." [Spike413 ]

HIT: Giorgio Armani
"Giorgio always delivers. I think that people don't recognize how talented he is, it's a shame. I don't know what I'm gonna to do if someday he decides to leave the fashion world." [whitewine92 ]
"It's gorgeous, so elegant and insanely wearable. I also like that he designs for every age group, in one collection there will be things that women of any age would wear." [AnaD ]

MISS: Alberta Ferretti
"The first few looks only made my eyes bleed." [anlabe32 ]
"I don't know what happened here, it almost looks cheap. The belts do something for me in some dresses, and the color addition helps other dresses as well. Such a waste for Alberta." [whitewine92 ]

HIT: Francesco Scognamiglio
"Lovely, the best Milan show so far." [AnaD ]
"Love the bulky jumpers with miniskirts and patterns peeking from underneath." [Aqua Tofana ]

HIT: Diesel Black Gold
"I kinda like it. Young, pretty... This is something that Wang should be doing instead of those ugly clothes." [whitewine92 ]
"My favourite so far... clean and fresh." [Aqua Tofana ]

HIT: Dsquared2
"Is it just me or is this a sort of LA-ified take on Lacroix? The colors, the chopped up bits-and-pieces approach, those little pouf minis...it's a sort of party girl take on Lacroix's signatures, and I don't exactly hate it." [Spike413 ]
"I actually....LOVE THIS! It's quite an interesting take on the 80s. We can't say that many designers referenced Lacroix when they did 80s fashion. We saw over the years a lot of Mugler, Montana, Alaïa..etc. I love the excess, the joie de vivre and the clash. It is actually working..." [Lola701 ]
"Looking at both collections, Dsquared2 has become the new D&G. And a better version at that." [anlabe32 ]

HIT: Bottega Veneta
"Now, that's what I call luxury. Everything looks well-made with a touch of experimenting details as usual. What I always love about Maier's work has always been the effortlessness and the confidence that the models exude. His designs always have the element of modernity that I really appreciate." [TaylorBinque ]
"Amazing collection! It's very elegant and ultra luxurious with sublime details. I think he is still very relevant and doesn't need to make noise or be too trendy to make his mark. I can't help but love the casting too!" [ogepma ]
"Best collection from Bottega Veneta ever. Tomas Maier and his crew did an excellent job. I want to wear soooooo many pieces desperately. Amazing show, stellar cast and vibe. I had tears in my eyes watching the show. Congrats!" [CATO ]

MISS: Philipp Plein
"So tacky and cheap." [EMLLover2013 ]
"Oh good, it's the follow-up to Fergie's music video that no one really ever asked for. The clothes are hideous enough by themselves, but a) the fact that he decided to title this show #AliceInGhettoland and b) his PR team let him. Yeah, no." [StoneSkipper ]
"Who buys this stuff?" [iclawhands ]

HIT: Marni
"This is what Phoebe Philo tried to achieve last season but failed. I definitely feel the same vibe from both collections, but this one isn't as ugly as the Celine one. It's closer to real life, too. The colour palette is interesting, toned down and summery, yet it's not bland with those vibrant reds and deep blues." [perhydrol ]
"It was very Celine indeed, some of the volumes and cuts are quite interesting. Oh, and I loved the jewellery." [mackos ]
"This is the first Marni collection I really, really liked like in years, since Fall 2008 to be exact." [christian zh ]

MISS: Jil Sander
"Wow, this was truly ugly! Who gave permission to create such an unflattering silhouette, damn it looks worse than Vetements' shapes! Nope, I loved last season but this looks like a piece of Issey Miyake car crash 80s hell. Terrible!" [Fiercification ]
"How disappointing... Unfortunately, if I were to see most of this collection without knowing the designer I would think of Vetements first. The leathers and plissé pieces were good, but the rest was pretty bad. The shorts throughout were horrible." [VogueDisciple93 ]
"Worst show of MFW. This guy used to be wonderful at Vionnet. He created some of my favorite pieces ever. Now, this looks like a mistake or a joke that lasted too long. This has nothing to do with Jil Sander! Instead of being focused on trends and silhouettes, he should be focused on the woman wearing those clothes. As if it wasn't bad enough, the silhouettes are not that well executed. This is bad in every level: in terms of integrity AND creativity." [Lola701 ]

MISS: Versace
"It's so bad. I liked one jacket and that's about it. I don't know, someone has been in love with Louis Vuitton's last resort, I can spot some Paco Rabanne influences here, too and it's not a good thing at Versace- they have a serious problem with their identity." [perhydrol ]
"I love seeing Naomi in Versace again but honestly the collections are disappointing. Amazing lineup of models to cover the flaws in her designs." [gianna ]
"This looks so ugly. How much does this cost? Because it looks so cheap." [thatsfierce ]

MISS: Dolce & Gabbana
"I got secondhand embarrassment during the whole show. From the dancers and the music, to the clothes and those tacky lighting crowns and shoes..." [Zelda Zonk ]
"The fake D&G T-shirts remind me of vintage Moschino (as well as some other looks). But with Moschino it felt fresh...this feels dated and boring. This collection looks like a self-parody of Dolce & Gabbana. I remember their late 90s collections, they were amazing. D&G are now a shadow of their former selves." [jeanclaude ]
"I just can't with D&G... So embarrassing." [Oxymore ]

MISS: Salvatore Ferragamo
"Those are very beautiful clothes but they are boring. They are not very Ferragamo, if Ferragamo means anything. I'm starting to lose faith in High Fashion. I don't understand why people feel the need to present boring-pretty clothes with no personality or identity in this over-crowded market. This didn't deserve a show. Maybe a lookbook or a newsletter for their tiny RTW clientele. I don't know! I miss the glamour, the luxury and the grown woman attitude. What's going on?" [Lola701 ]
"Gosh this is generic as generic can possibly get. I don't understand why they need to give a big paycheck for a designer to deliver something so soulless and boring, just get some low paying team and they'll produce the same work." [Marc10 ]
"The lack of depth is due to the loss of Massimiliano Giornetti correct? He left back in March after Fall 2016. Which resulted in this in-house team collection. I enjoyed Giornetti's touch at Ferragamo, he could have presented a collection quite similar to this but with a more luxurious approach. This to me looks like Iceberg. Cold. They honestly could have gone without a show. Focused on accessories and fragrances and finding a CD to give this brand some badly needed direction." [TheoG ]

HIT: Gucci
"I thought it was FABULOUS! There were so many new things and so many beautiful things as well. There was a sequined section in the middle that had me drooling on my keyboard (figuratively of course). The shoes were out of this world. I thought it looked a lot cleaner and more thought out than Fall. I must say I loved it!" [GivenchyHomme ]
"I LOVE this!!! The clothes were amazing! Yes, it was tricky and costumey in some quarters but it was bold, beautiful and dreamy. I liked how it was really varied in terms of the number of designs but felt well coordinated. I am also a fan of those massive hats and shoes! The show itself was stunning; from the music to the set and the general mood." [ogepma ]
"My heart goes out to this man. It's funny because I'm not usually into this kind of fashion, but they are so heartfelt, so beautiful about his vision to connect to me on an emotional level. It's another amazing collection, full of fabulous characters in equally fabulous clothes. There's a joy of dressing up, to put on a show with yourself, to be unapologetically fabulous, something that Galliano and McQueen used to do very well and a certain other designer is trying to do but failing miserably *cough cough*. And even if you don't want the whole drama, the separate pieces are strong and easily democratic to anyone's personal style. I just really LOVE it all!" [Marc10 ]

MISS: Roberto Cavalli
"Ugh, why does he do this? Awful casting, the styling, the annoying set. Last season was the same too. The styling especially ruins it because there are actually some nice things in there and you can never notice them. I remember seeing Natasha [Poly] wear a really beautiful dress on the red carpet and it looked sexy too, but I didn't realize that it was from the pile of mess that he showed on the runway." [Scotty ]
"Unfortunately, following the huge exposure he had with Beyoncé's Lemonade dress, it was kinda expected for him to follow this 70s boring boho madness. I wish he was confident enough to continue to explore the 80s trashiness of his first collection for Cavalli. I feel like they are having a bit of an identity crisis at Cavalli. The set is very 70s, the campaign is very modern and the brand is somewhere..." [Lola701 ]
"I'm still mesmerized that Peter Dundas managed to flop this hard at Cavalli. I thought it would be one of the smoothest hirings ever. Yet again with this corny, textbook '70s boho'. Not an ounce of design and personality." [Marc10 ]

HIT: Prada
"PRADA!!!! SHE'S BACK! This is honestly the best Prada collection in years - and not only that but I feel like Miuccia just took back her role as leader of the pack, here. I tuned in to the livestream, and I was bracing myself for another season of over-styled, over-designed, gimmicky accessories, and poorly cast child models. Boy was I wrong! I was thinking to myself, 'she'd have to open the show with a plain black slip dress with no styling this time around in order to do something worthwhile.' And she did JUST THAT. What feels like the first time in years I am seeing clever, fun, attractive grown up fashion on women looking fresh, clean and genuinely gorgeous. It's a thrill!" [dior_couture1245 ]
"First Prada collection I enjoyed in a very long time. Not as pretentious as she usually is and not just weird for the sake of being weird. I liked the cleaner lines and the somewhat stripped-down styling. A nice and welcomed change from what we see in every other collection these days." [MyNameIs ]
"It's so modern, fresh, and slightly nostalgic. It reminds me of the early 2000s Prada, an era that she defined. I'm obsessed with that time period, the movies, the music, and the pop culture. There is certainly more than one woman here. We have the professional, the bitch teenager, a sophisticated lady, and an eccentric. It all works together to form a cohesive vision. It's not complicated and that's perfectly fine. She doesn't have to be the intellectual all the time." [GivenchyHomme ]

MISS: Emilio Pucci
"Too basic. And the hats reminded me of Cousin Itt from The Addams Family ." [jeanclaude ]
"It's boring and the prints are nauseating. It's a shame, I'm a fan of vintage Pucci." [AnaD ]
"So unfortunate that an established house known for amazing prints gave out some of the worst ones I have ever seen on a runway!" [ToniOrtega ]

HIT: Fendi
"This collection is superb. I love them all." [kewkaw ]

HIT: Moschino
"Not gonna lie, I thought that was kinda clever." [MyNameIs ]
"I really like this. The clothes actually look better than I expected. And of course the paper doll twist is fun." [TaylorBinque ]
