The Chanel Metiers d’Art Collection showed today in Rome and felt like a tribute to the grieving city of Paris following the November 13 terrorist attacks.
Karl Lagerfeld recreated a Parisian street for the presentation, held at the Cinecittà film studio No. 5. The appointed hashtag for the evening was #ParisinRome.
Inspired by the late French movie set designer Alexandre Trauner, Lagerfeld’s black and white Parisian street housed a cinema alongside bakeries, cheese shops and wine merchants, according to WWD.
The cinema installation was a fitting backdrop for the premiere of Lagerfeld’s new movie Once and Forever which stars Kristen Stewart as a “fiery” actress hired to play Coco Chanel in a biopic.
Cinema was a recurring theme with a mock tabloid “The Roman Express” that featured classic photos of French actresses from the 50s and 60s and a handbag in the shape of a vintage movie camera.
The collection itself was sultry and “haunting,” as Vogue’s Suzy Menkes called it, with long fingerless gloves, feathered lace dresses, leather minis, shiny pencil skirts and structured peacoats.
Rooney Mara, French actress Clotilde Hesme, Princess Caroline of Monaco, Carla Fendi and Silvia Venturini Fendi and, of course, Kristen Stewart sat front row. Stewart, the face of the Chanel Metiers d’Art Collection advertising campaign, told WWD Karl creates “what resonates emotionally with people.” We think all of Paris would agree.
