Milan Men’s Fashion Week has been in full swing this week and, while one can only dream of gawping at the runways while snacking on biscotti, we can at least gaze upon the beautiful clothing on the interweb as the next best thing, right?
Closing the shows this week was a tour de force of menswear from Armani, Cavalli and Canada’s very own DSquared2, as established by Toronto twin brothers Dean and Dan Caten. Generally known for their memorable runway shows, it seems that this season, the boys have outdone themselves with a memorable “Cell Block Tango” of cuffed jeans, Dr. Marten style work boots and leather jackets.
The stage itself was transformed into a jail as inmates-come-models stomped down the walkway in orange bomber jackets with “Caten Penitentiary” emblazoned across the back. Many bloggers have compared the sight to an episode of Orange is the New Black, or given the plentiful supply of straightjackets – yes, I said straightjackets – a scene from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
I like to think this Fall 2014 show was Dean and Dan’s response to fashion crimes, perhaps the recent legal woes plaguing Dolce & Gabbana and Prada, to name but a few. In any case, the collection had an exceedingly dystopian feel, which I loved, as well as being very wearable for the discerning gent looking to break bad.
International DSquared2 fans will also be happy to know that the label is opening its first stores in the U.S. The first store, scheduled for the latter half of 2014, will be a 2,200-square-foot boutique in Soho, followed by a second on Rodeo Drive and a possible third location in Las Vegas. In the meantime, check out their latest collection and let us know if you think Dean and Dan have committed the perfect crime.
