Let’s call it the most subtle movie tie-in ever. Ports 1961’s Fiona Cibani’s named Zabriskie Point as inspiration for this collection, but other than the sunset-print dresses much ado is being made of, there was no obvious connection to the film.
Done in white, pink and blue, the Spring 2013 Ports 1961 collection displayed the exemplary tailoring that wasn’t always on show here but has become expected of late. There were some technically impressive pieces that nonetheless came across a bit boring. There were a lot of A-line silhouettes and other voluminous shapes that kept fabric away from the body. This created a disconcerting sense that a woman’s shape was missing from the collection.
The sunset pieces provided some warm tones and visual interest, but beyond that even they weren’t very memorable. While Cibani could get a bit kooky back in the day and these designs are more well crafted, that old sense of creativity and vision felt missing from this collection.
