Why Pearls Are the Next Big Thing and Other Fall Fashion Tips from Costume Designer Eric Daman

Eric Daman: The hot color for this summer has been bright orange, which is actually a perfect transitional color into fall. Instead of pairing this sun-kissed hue with bright whites and light denims, free fall into autumnal accents of rich, deep greens, merlots and indigo.

Not ready to stow away your favorite summer nautical tee or tank? Make a hot style statement on a cool fall day and layer under a chic shrunken boy’s flannel [shirt]. Daisy Dukes have become a summer staple. Add a pair of textured or opaque black tights and flat boots to keep them fashionably fall apropos.

tFS: What fall fashion trend are you most excited about?

ED: The second coming of grunge and it’s reinvention. I’m loving the clean millennial embodiment of this gritty music-based trend. Slip dresses are soft, sleek and modern especially when paired with a boyfriend cardi or blazer. The new flannel is soft, crisp and a perfect fit. Keep it feminine friendly with a high-waisted chambray circle skirt.

And the accessoire du jour? Pearls. They ran rampant on the runways and are a nostalgic classic. Formerly for the conservative and geriatric set, pearls get a fresh look for fall in heavy Chanel-inspired layers or subtle single strands worn with your everyday signature pieces.

tFS: What’s the number one fashion investment women should make for fall?

ED: A great pair of lace-up or moto style boots. Or a classic trench.

tFS: Let’s forget fall fashion for a second, what’s the best general fashion advice you have for women regardless of season?

ED: My Motto: “Style is 20% fashion and 80% confidence.” Confidence is truly a woman’s best accessory.
