Whether any moves are made in that direction remains to be seen, but in the meantime more local designers are choosing to coincide their Resort showings with the big overseas shows. Here are three collections you might have missed while your eyes were cast towards Milan and Paris.
Resort 2014: Take a Break From Winter with Bassike, Karen Walker and Sass & Bide
Bassike
Bassike’s Resort 2014 lookbook is a trans-Tasman success story, starring their luxe minimalism and supported by fresh New Zealand face Holly Rose Emery. The collection itself is everything we’ve come to expect from this sartorial dissident of excess: Pared back yet never leaving you hungry. This season’s oversized 60s shapes and blown up prints season practically scream for a glass of rosé and a harbor view.

Sass & Bide
On the rival end of the simplicity scale are Sarah-Jane Clark and Heidi Middleton, whose sharp prints and bold embellishments have been finding favour overseas for years. Resort 2014 took Victorian inspirations and hit them with a shot of something futuristic. Pretty smart business-wise, too, since there’s something there for the girl who’s into antique lace and white chiffon as well as the girl who’d rather a space-age party dress in deep bronze.

Karen Walker
Honorary Aussie Karen Walker is known for shift dresses and eyewear with a sense of humor, so it’s little wonder her Resort collections are always a screaming success. For the New Zealand designer’s second Resort outing in New York, she showed boxy shorts and blown-up minidresses in sky blue and lush tangerine. Team them with a pair of her signature shades and Maroubra Beach becomes the Maldives.
