On May 5th, Stella McCartney hosted a Fall 2009 trunk show at Barneys’ Madison Avenue flagship store in New York City. This was the day after the Costume Institute Gala where she dressed, among others, Kate Bosworth, Kate Hudson and Liv Tyler.
The trunk show featured models strutting their stuff in the clothing, and a special question and answer segment where Stella McCartney was interviewed by Simon Doonan, the vivacious creative director of Barneys.
Unsurprisingly, it was the jumpsuit that Stella McCartney wore to the Met Ball that got the most attention. Doonan noted: “She looked so fierce. I’m dying to know where she got her passion for the jumpsuit. Is it like a Pussy Galore situation? Some designers are quite monosyllabic, but Stella’s a spirited girl with a fabulous sense of humor.”
As for the making of McCartney’s jumpsuit, New York Magazine reported that it was pieced together at the very last minute.
Liv Tyler told a reporter at the Time 100 gala that she, Kate Hudson, and McCartney all got ready in the designer’s suite at the Carlyle. When she arrived at two o’clock, McCartney and her team were literally cutting up a piece of lace fabric with scissors, which later became McCartney’s black-lace jumpsuit. The whole thing was supposedly made in no more than two or three hours.
Speaking of the Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people list, McCartney was notably one of the only fashion designers to be honored. She was noted for her ecological and ethical initiatives, and her friend Gwyneth Paltrow wrote the blurb in Time about the designer.
