Cartier, the famed French jewelry house, turned to the equally lauded photographer Bruce Weber to curate a book celebrating 100 years of Cartier’s presence in the United States. Titled “Cartier I Love You: 100 Years of Cartier in America,” the book contains a compilation of new images Weber shot in Miami this year, as well as images collected from the past.
The photographer noted that he was inspired by a range of things. In particular, he singled out Elizabeth Taylor who told him a number of great stories about Cartier. “One time, when I was photographing her at her home in Bel Air, I saw this beautiful red box on her dressing table. On the top it said Cartier, and on the bottom there was a stencil that read ‘Mike Todd Tiara,’ referring to one of Taylor’s late husbands, the producer Mike Todd.”
Weber added, “The more he worked on the book’s research, the more I discovered the great talent of everyone in the Cartier family, and the more I knew this project would be an occasion to really learn something.”
The book is said to artistically weave images of American society figures such as Doris Duke, Barbara Hutton and Daisy Fellowes with images of tattooed models covered in bold Cartier baubles. In addition, readers will find a number of archival pictures of notable figures including Jacqueline Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Gloria Swanson, Serge Gainsbourg, and Jean Cocteau, all of whom favored the French brand.
“Cartier I Love You: 100 Years of Cartier in America,” will be on sale starting June 16th. It will be available in Cartier boutiques across the United States, and proceeds of the book sales will benefit Service Nation, an association that aims to raise awareness about social issues in the United States.
