Just two days before it was set to take place before a crowd of about 2000 people, Roberto Cavalli announced that he would not be showing his diffusion line, Just Cavalli, in a big runway show due to the line’s licensee, Ittierre, filing for bankruptcy protection after running out of cash in early February.
However hopes are that Ittierre will still be able to produce and distribute the Fall/Winter 2009 collection and it was thus presented – though in a notably smaller presentation.
The designer seemed to draw his influence from a biker meets military meets Italian vacationer look with many of the pieces mixing Cavalli’s signature over-the-top aesthetic – vibrant prints including leopard, uber mini dresses, pointy shoes paired with socks, and gold lame baggy pants– with more structured notes (think Balmain) and more rocker notes (think Alexander Wang).
A considerable amount of denim was shown — mostly with rips so big they could be deemed more cut-out details. However, unlike Wang who made the look fresh, modern, and wearable, Cavalli’s looked somewhat dated and not particularly easy to wear despite the fact that the designer is widely known for his jeans.
The most covetable looks were the snug, cropped leather jackets, the shearling accented coats, and the jet black mini dresses.
