Leave it to Margiela to, once again, inject a large dose of humor into our oh-so-serious world of fashion. What better way to celebrate Margiela’s anniversary than to send a barrage of his most famous concepts down the runway?
Everything from the signature exaggerated shoulders – which every other designer seems to be taking their own stab at this season – to the AIDS t-shirt, make an appearance and collectively, it’s a great recap of what we’ve seen in recent years.
Though this collection is undoubtedly meant to be retrospective and more of an entertaining show, there were still some nice, new garments to be found amidst the madness.
However, the best part about this collection in particular is without a doubt the overall presentation. In true Margiela form, the models’ faces are covered up, either by way of a masked face or a Cousin It style wig. The wigs didn’t stop at the heads, either; some hirsute pieces emerged down the runway, with what was seemingly a wig on each shoulder, and there was even one garment comprised entirely of wigs.
There were many other props involved as well, such as a gigantic ring box framing one of the models’ upper body.
Speaking of props, the most notable had to be the larger-than-life sized birthday cake which was supported by multiple models.
It would have been sort of nice to see the iconic pieces expanded upon for this show but that’s neither here nor there. Overall, I think this collection and presentation was a great way to celebrate this brand and the work we’ve come to associate it with, as well as all the humorous and boundary-pushing aspects.
