As a product of the 80s, my formative years were spent dancing to Madonna music videos, watching Cindy Crawford host House of Style and lusting for the (literally) untouchable ensembles tempting me from the windows of Marshall Field’s (long live, Marshall Field’s!) All these references swirled in my head whenever someone inquired what I wanted to be when I grew up. A supermodel like Naomi? A voice like Whitney’s blaring from my cassette tape deck? The name on the label of an exquisite Versace dress? With a bit of luck, perhaps, someday, I could be one…but clearly not all three. And that, my friends, is where Efva Attling and I differ.
Julie Bensman: You’ve worn so many hats! Is there an occupation you’ve not yet held but dream to?
Efva Attling: Well, what have I not done?! Seriously, I am so happy with what I’ve achieved so far but I always aim for the stars. “Sic itur ad astra”…you never know what´s around the corner…
JB: Why do you think the Efva Attling point of view resonates so deeply with customers?
EA: Different expressions have different meanings for people and much of my jewelry consists of talking pieces. This means you can connect with people by talking about “amor vincit omni a” or “love conquers all.” That can start a discussion!
EA: It depends where she is in her life. Maybe to strengthen her self-conscious, she should get “Me, Myself and I” (shown above).
JB: Other than yourself, which designers are you intrigued by right now?
EA: Pamela Love!
JB: What are you most looking forward to this fall/winter?
EA: I hope that all my flights back and forth to Scandinavia leave on time.
Thinking of my own holiday travel plans, perhaps Efva and I aren’t SO different after all…
xoxo,
Julie
