It has only been a few weeks since Roland Mouret opened his first stand-alone store on Carlos Street in London, but for Fall 2011, the designer was interestingly enough inspired by Manhattan, more specifically the women in Woody Allen films. The inspiration, at first, seems like a puzzling direction to take for a designer who is best known for his form-fitting cocktail dresses, but in Mouret’s hands, it translated into welcome moments of more casual, sportswear looks. In fact, far from abandoning his gorgeous dresses, he instead opted to show them in both his classic form-fitting iterations and looser, flowing versions, both in a variety of colors and hem lengths.
The menswear-inspired, loose-fitting clothing that characterized the wardrobe of some of Woody Allen’s most famous leading ladies (think Annie Hall) made for relaxed daywear pieces including denim pants, loose cardigans, casual sharp jackets, while fur trim, vests, and coats offered something more luscious than the more understated silhouettes.
