Pamella Roland Fall 2011 Runway Review

Pamella Roland may perhaps be best known now for designing the gold sequined jumpsuit that Lindsay Lohan wore to the 2010 MTV Movie Awards when no fashion house wanted to lend her one of their designs, but the designer deserves a closer look beyond that unfortunate look (and pairing!) Sure, her collection this season felt somewhat jumbled and could have used some editing to avoid feeling repetitive, but there were some beautiful staple gowns in the collection. Fur, literal animal prints, and painterly cocktail dresses all popped up in the show as well, working with some of the trends we’ve been seeing so far this season.

Each of the models had an Audrey Hepburn-like twisted updo, and when the designs were in keeping with that old Hollywood aesthetic – that is to say feminine, delicately embroidered, and soft –they worked. When the designer went in a more oriental direction like she did with her finale look which consisted of crimson red pants covered by a dramatic cape-like flower embellished top, the collection fell flat. Roland’s inspiration was East meets West, hopefully next season she’ll settle on just honing “the East.”
