There are few places more chaotic than backstage during New York fashion week. Designers, models, dressers, stylists, and squads of beauty professionals unite with the common purpose of getting thirty to forty models on the runway at the appointed time.
The most common backstage sight is an array of models being pawed by four or five people simultaneously applying makeup, nail polish, and styling hair. During this time, some models collapse into a zen-like state, while others chat up the glam squad and other models. If their hands are free, fiddling with electronic devices is de rigueur, with reading coming in a distant second. Other common sights are the models lining up for the runway show, photographers taking beauty shots and candids, getting dressed (seldom captured on camera), designers and dressers adjusting garments, and models just hanging out.
Let’s take a stroll backstage at some of F/W 2010’s biggest shows…
