Following the cult fashion film directed by Todd Cole that the Mulleavy sisters released earlier this month, there was no doubt that the soft sunlight-soaked wheat tones that blanketed the film would play a major role in the Rodarte Fall collection.
Inspiration was drawn from the 1978 film Days of Heaven, set in the Texas Panhandle, and the dusty landscape certainly translated. Many of the shapes we saw today were reprised from the Spring collection but with new techniques and their signature embellishments. Dresses and jackets that would suit Laura Ingalls Wilder were shown alongside slim trousers and curvy jackets, but as usual, the detailing on everything from jackets to jumpers was impeccable.
The designers worked with embroidery, tablecloth lace, horsehair, and wool to create the effects that adorned the looks of prairie Americana, wheat fields, and, fittingly, Dorothy’s ruby red shoes were themes explored. The expectations that surround a Rodarte show are raised with each collection and this season certainly didn’t dissapoint. The earthy-toned pioneer dresses and soft hints of sky blue will certainly be remembered as standouts.
