10 Things We Learned About Relationships from ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

By now, you’ve probably read Fifty Shades of Grey in book form and watched it on the big screen multiple times. We don’t blame you, it’s the sauciest movie of the century. The good news is that it’s now out on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD so you can replay your favorite steamy scenes between Christian and Ana over and over again. And to celebrate the release, we decided to compile a list of our favorite relationship tips straight from the flick itself.

Be a Good Listener

Listening to your significant other is a key component to a successful relationship. No one wants to hear you ramble on about yourself the whole time, no matter how important you are. And if your partner happens to be shy like Ana, ask them interesting questions about themselves to get the conversation started.

Buy Meaningful Gifts

Lavish gifts that show off dollar signs are downright tacky. While Christian is filthy rich, he still showers Ana with thoughtful gifts like first edition books by her favorite author and a new laptop since hers was broken. It doesn’t matter how much or how little you spend, just make sure there’s a special reason behind the gift.

Be Experimental

Keeping things interesting in a relationship is a must. Ana steps out of her comfort zone and explores Christian’s ‘Red Room of Pain,’ which is a huge step for her. We’re not suggesting you go all submissive on your beau, but doing something new and off the beaten path will add a whole new level of excitement to your love affair.

Put Your Foot Down

If you don’t like something, it’s essential to speak up. Ana knows right away that there were several deal breakers in Christian’s contract and she voices her concerns. Christian gladly listens to her points and they make several changes. While you may not be signing a sexual contract any time soon, the biggest piece of advice from this scenario is that it’s OK to say no if you don’t feel comfortable about something.

Challenge Your Partner

Challenging your partner is super hot. Saying yes all the time is not. Remember how Ana drives Christian wild during their business meeting at his office? It’s because she decides to walk away from his sexual fantasy, challenging him to wait until the contract is signed. In other words, don’t always give in. This will make you a lot more desirable.

Don’t Brag

Instead of boasting about his flying skills, Christian opts to show Ana instead, swooping her off her feet with a ride in his private helicopter (which, of course, leads to a steamy sexual encounter at his Seattle home). That’s way more of a turn-on than bragging nonstop.

Do the Unexpected

It’s always nice to surprise your partner from time to time. From having the driver pick out a sexy outfit for Ana when she sleeps over to flying out to Georgia because he wants to meet Ana’s mom, Christian always does the unexpected. It doesn’t have to be super extravagant, just enough to knock your significant other off their feet.

A Simple Sext Can Go a Long Way

The last thing you want to do is text him 24/7, especially while he’s at work. But sending a sexy text during the middle of the day is just what the love doctor ordered and will have him counting down the hours until he gets to see you again.

Inquiring Minds

First dates and encounters can be super awkward and nerve-racking. Ana, for instance, is so nervous during her interview with Christian that she starts to ask him boring questions. As soon as she gets comfortable though, she takes it to a whole new level and inquires about the things she really wants to know. This is one of the easiest and most fun ways to get to know one another.

Flaunt Your Talents

Whether it’s tying knots with rope or whipping up a delicious breakfast, showing off your talents from time to time can unleash confidence and romance all at once. And plus, pancakes in bed is super sexy. Whatever your talent may be, don’t forget to let it shine.
