V Mag has just released cover images from its Winter 2011 Model Issue and there’s lots to look at: four seperate covers with two models apiece, all done up in overbright neons and celebratory leis. Photographed by Terry Richardson and styled by who else but the overcomitted Carine Roitfeld, the kindest thing you could say about these covers is that they’re all trying too hard.
Starring Daphne Groeneveld and Saskia de Brauw (above, left), Sui He and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem (above, right), Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Lindsey Wixson (below, left), and Candice Swanepoel and Joan Smalls (below, right), the covers do offer up a cornucopia of today’s most of-the-moment models. With a superstar creative team of the ever-talented Carine Roitfeld and the very in-demand Terry Richardson, let’s just say that this could have, and should have, been better.
The mood and concept of the cover shoot mirror Gisele Bundchen’s recent Mario Testino-shot cover for Vogue UK: both mags made use of colorful, ultratight leggings, neon brights, and festive party favors. But while Vogue UK‘s execution managed to keep the 80s redux party concept luxe, tasteful, and modern, V Mag‘s covers are just plain tacky.
Also, what’s going on with the leggings? I thought we’d all exorcized our leggings demons a few years back. It’s way too early for this trend to make a comeback.
