Dior is revitalizing their J’Adore fragrance campaign this season with a new commercial featuring Charlize Theron that pays tribute to Hollywood icons of the past such as Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, and Marilyn Monroe. Forum members weren’t sure what to think about the newly released clip.
“I’m speechless about that commercial,” wrote Street_a_Licious. “Is that a Marilyn Monroe doppelganger or did they manipulate old footage of her? Same with Marlene and Grace… it’s pretty apparent that J’Adore is a cash cow for Dior. Given that, I don’t know why they continue to [mess] around with the formula. Starting in mid-September, J’Adore will be reformulated, adding orange blossoms to the mix. The people at Dior clearly don’t know about the good old proverb ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.'”
“It’s definitely manipulated footage of Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe,” iluvjeisa decided. “The latter is probably from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes… a bit unseemly to actually have Marilyn speak – it doesn’t sound like her. Marlene Dietrich, though, I’m not sure if that is actually her. Part of the issue with that could be that they’re using a black and white movie,” she added.
Aquitaine made an apt observation about Marilyn Monroe’s inclusion in the commercial. “I find it ironic that Marilyn appears holding the fragrance as she is so linked to Chanel nº5,” she pointed out.
I personally find these commercials that mingle the dead with the living to be a bit jarring – especially since the dead have no say about their inclusion as endorsers of whatever products are being peddled. Check out the video below to judge for yourself.
