Tate McRae Expertly Recreates Britney Spears’ Risqué VMAs Outfit

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards celebration was packed with homages to pop icons, which included Tate McRae recreating Britney Spears’ iconic 2001 VMAs look. Instead of replicating the same look, the “Greedy” hitmaker put her own spin on the dress while also maintaining the risqué outfit’s authenticity. Let’s have a look at how McRae’s 2024 VMAs ensemble was different from what Spears wore.

Tate McRae arrived at the 2024 VMAs in a see-through black lace dress by Roberto Cavalli. The mini dress featured long sleeves and a high neck. Underneath the revealing lace, McRae covered herself with a black balconette bra and matching black strappy thong. The “Exes” singer completed the look with black heels.

Spears’ 2001 VMAs Dolce & Gabbana outfit was notably different from McRae’s recreation. The “Toxic” singer sported navy blue attire which featured different tailoring and design. Besides that, Spears wore boy-short underwear underneath for more coverage. Nonetheless, both the singers wore their blonde hair down in waves at their respective VMA appearances.

Following the award show, McRae took to her Instagram to share a carousel of photos from the night. The singer also flaunted her posterior in one of the photos, which gave a detailed look of the dress’ cut-out design on the back. McRae’s ensemble was showered with love as fans gushed about the sultry attire. A user commented, “Ate n left ZERO crumbs.” Another wrote, “THIS SERVES BRITNEY.” Meanwhile, several others gushed about the “Britney dress.”

McRae was not the only one who paid homage to Spears at the 2024 VMAs. Megan Thee Stallion carried a real snake in tribute to the pop icon by recreating her look from the “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance at the 2001 show. Besides them, Sabrina Carpenter also paid homage to Madonna by wearing her vintage gown from the 1991 Oscars.
