Laverne Cox Makes a Case for Berets on the Cover of Ladygunn Magazine

OK, Gucci, Blair Waldorf, Carrie Bradshaw, Laverne Cox — you’ve convinced us. This winter, we’re bringing back the beret. In the latest issue of indie magazine Ladygunn, Laverne Cox is Twiggy meets Madeline in perhaps her most captivating look to date. On the cover, the Rocky Horror Picture Show ringmaster rocks a tan Reformation top (we could spot that ribbing a mile away), a tomato red Maje sweater and a coordinating (and might we add, incredible) beret with Alexis Bittar jewelry. Cox models the perfect thick, floating 60s cut crease courtesy of Deja Davenport, who went with seafoam green eyeliner, because who doesn’t need a break from black?

Laverne’s hair, done in shoulder-grazing layers by Neeko Abriol, is such a refreshing, natural look on the actress, we’re flabbergasted she’s never tried it out before. The mod vibes run throughout the editorial: in another stunning shot, Cox sports pale yellow and black checker-framed oval sunnies, a cheetah print neck scarf and a simple black crew neck.

We love to see Cox celebrating her confidence and quirkiness in such a low-key yet high-fashion way. While Laverne’s headline-making covers for Time and Cosmopolitan represent huge wins for the transgender community, it’s features like this one that really underscore the fact that the most important quality in a model is not race, size or gender affiliation. Rather, it’s his or her essence and ability to make the public want a product — in this case, that #flames red beret.

Pre-order your copy of the issue here and remember, T-14 days until the Emmy winner takes on the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Fox’s small-screen remake of Rocky Horror Picture Show.
