Amy Schumer Shuts Down Instagram Body Shamers and It’s Perfect

Internet trolls present us with an existential dilemma: Do we ignore them, saying without saying that their remarks aren’t worth acknowledging, or do we take them on, knowing full well they feed off of combative (anonymous, cowardly) exchanges?

Amy Schumer has never been one to shy away from a worthwhile argument. Time and again she’s used her rapier wit to slash away at body negativity — she’s taken on sizeism in retail, criticized the use of the admittedly sexist term “plus-size,” and spoken of the challenges of being a curvy woman in Hollywood. Even when the comedian, actress and author is vacationing in Hawaii with her hunky carpenter boyfriend Ben Hanisch, she’s still got time to take down those virtual critics who seem to exist solely to spew hate and then evaporate into the ether.

Yesterday morning, the actress posted a grainy paparazzi photo of herself wading through the Hawaiian surf in a navy blue one-piece. In her caption, she preemptively addressed her haters: “I meant to write ‘good morning trolls!’ I hope you find some joy in your lives today in a human interaction and not just in writing unkind things to a stranger you’ve never met who triggers something in you that makes you feel powerless and alone. This is how I look. I feel happy. I think I look strong and healthy and also like Miss Trunchbull from Matilda. Kisses!”

Needless to say, the trolls still reared their ugly heads, but the majority of her Instagram followers shared our feelings toward the photo, which we think commenter @queeneofkings summed up nicely: “You are such a beautiful, majestic unicorn in this world of grumpy trolls, keep frolicking in the sea of awesome humans.”

We also love the fact that the beach seems to be Schumer’s preferred locale when mic-dropping. See below.
