Ruby Rose is the latest Australian export to make it big in Hollywood, being thrust into prominence thanks to her role as Stella Carlin in the latest series of Orange is the New Black.
The beauty has become a popular fixture online, and is making headlines after opening up about her struggle with gender identity. Recently, she revealed that she saved for surgery to become a boy from the age of just five.
The multi-talented DJ, model and actress told Access Hollywood, “I had this jar. I probably had, like, 19 cents to go towards this surgery that I didn’t really know a lot about.”
Ruby added just where she found out about the option, too. “I think I’d seen, like, a daytime documentary, something on Oprah, and I was like, ‘That’s what I’m going to do’,” she explained.
Ruby came out as a lesbian aged 12, and continued to save for the surgery until she was 15. By her mid-teens she felt more comfortable in her own skin, and even shaved her head.
Embracing her individuality she said, “I started to change the way that I dressed and talked and I realised that I didn’t want to transition and I just wanted to be more comfortable in my own skin.”
Luckily Ruby has always had the support of her family. She recalled how her mother wasn’t sure what was going on with her, but said, “If you’re happy then do it.”
The confident young star is proud and vocal about her struggle with gender identity and being gender fluid, placing her in the company of fellow gender-fluid celeb advocate Miley Cyrus.
