Tkay Maidza Spills on Vogue Experience and Upcoming Festival Outfits

Australian hip-hop and oversized-clothing queen Tkay Maidza has been killin’ it on the music scene for a while now, but really sprung onto the fashion circuit with her amazing full-pager in Vogue Australia‘s July 2015 “music issue”.

With the one and only Lorde on the cover and the likes of Isabella Manfredi, Courtney Barnett and Meg Mac also inside the issue, it was a big score for young Tkay, who has recently been covered by Nylon magazine as well.

“It’s really cool and surreal when you see stuff like Vogue and Nylon. ” Tkay explained to Music Feeds. “Obviously I know about it months in advance before everyone else finds out about it. But when it actually happens it’s like, ‘ahhh,’ and then everyone else is like, ‘Do you know how big this is?’ And I’m like, ‘It actually is big’,” she continued.

Because being featured in the fashion bible is the dream for many aspiring models, Tkay had to get her head around the idea and appreciate it. “You have to take a moment and realise not a lot of people get to be in Vogue,” she explained. “There’s so many models that want to be in Vogue and I’m just in there, like a random girl. It’s hard for so many other people and it’s happening for me.
”

Regardless of the Vogue inclusion, Tkay has been proving her salt in the fashion industry for some time now. While we first fell in love with her in the Mimco x Frends collab campaign, she’s been upping the wardrobe ante at festivals and events ever since.

With Splendour in the Grass and Snow Tunes creeping their way onto the calendar, Tkay also told Music Feeds what kind of style we can expect on-stage. “I’m excited. I’m going all out,” Tkay teased of her Splendour gig. “I have my own custom pilot suit made. It’s going to be so sick.”

As for Snow Tunes in Jindabye during the popular snow season, Tkay admits she doesn’t really know what to wear in such cold weather. “I’d probably wear a pilot suit, or a onesie,” she spilled, with us crossing our fingers for a non-animal one. “I never wear beanies but I’d probably wear one.”
