It’s not surprising that a fashion designer would have strong opinions on how other people dress, but Giorgio Armani is really toeing the line of intolerance with some recent comments he made about how he believes men should dress, specifically homosexual men.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, the designer lent some controversial-but-vague opinions on how he thinks gay men should present themselves sartorially. “A homosexual man is a man 100 per cent. He does not need to dress homosexual,” he said. “When homosexuality is exhibited to the extreme — to say, ‘Ah, you know I’m homosexual,’ — that has nothing to do with me. A man has to be a man.”
Armani never makes it clear exactly what he means by “dressing homosexual,” but we’re going to guess his notion is steeped in stereotypes and antiquated ideas on what men should wear. Whether a man is in a sparkly suit or a tutu – as long as he considers himself a man, he is still a man. And we’re pretty sure autonomous, free-thinking gay men around the world do not need Giorgio Armani telling them how to clothe themselves. Also, we’re still not sure what “extreme” homosexuality even is? Gays doing gnarly gazelle flips?
Armani also offered some comments on the types of male bodies he prefers: “I don’t like muscle boy. Not too much gym. I like somebody healthy, somebody solid, who looks after his body but doesn’t use his muscles too much.”
In conclusion, fellas, if you’re trying to impress Mr. Armani, please don’t be too ripped and for goodness sake, dress like a real man – whatever that means.
