Ferguson Supporters Call for a Black Friday Boycott

Supporters of Michael Brown won’t be opening their wallets this Black Friday weekend, now that the Michael Brown Leadership Coalition has asked concerned citizens across the country to boycott the shopping event in support of the young teenager who was gunned down by police officer Darren Wilson.

Social media has been the outlet of choice for activists to spread the word and encourage people to abstain from cashing in on the buying frenzy that makes up for the biggest shopping weekend of the year. The hope is that by not supporting these symbols of capitalism, the country will reconsider the way it treats its citizens in our justice system. As one advocate @stankofa tweeted, “If our lives don’t matter to them, our protests don’t, either. Take away what matters: their money. #BoycottBlackFriday.”

New Black Panther Party member Dacia Polk told International Business Times“We are asking you to withdraw your participation the entire weekend. There will not be business as usual in America while our people are being killed.”

This is one of many efforts by supporters of Brown and his family to attempt to make positive change in the wake of the Grand Jury decision not to indict Wilson for killing the unarmed black teen.
