Eva Mendes is a new mother to a little girl with Ryan Gosling and through her pregnancy and the following months, has kept a pretty low profile. It’s understandable. She is a celebrity after all, and as we know, that affords little privacy. Indeed, it’s amazing how inconspicuous Mendes has been since giving birth to little Esmeralda Amada.
But Mendes finally resurfaced for an interview with Violet Grey and the talk, of course, was firmly on her status as a new mom and how she managed to keep her pregnancy a secret for so long. The actress told the beauty site that the choice to keep her pregnancy private was the first in a long road dedicated to upholding her daughter’s privacy. “I know that it seems all very innocuous when you’re flipping through a tabloid at the doctor’s office or see a photo of a pregnant lady online, but I find the media’s ‘bump watch’ obsession to be both intrusive and stressful. So I made a decision to eject myself from it completely. I was like, ‘Annnnd I’m out.'”
Mendes says she knew for a while she was going to have a little girl and that she and Gosling had a lot of fun naming her. “We both love the Esmeralda character from the Victor Hugo novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame and just think it’s a beautiful name. Her middle is Amada, which was my grandmother’s name. It means ‘beloved’ in Spanish.”
Mendes seems pretty committed to upholding Esmeralda’s privacy, so there’s no telling how long it will be until we get a glimpse of the tyke. But one thing’s for sure: the girl is lucky to have parents so dedicated to protecting her in the crazy world of Hollywood.
