ROCKERS, THE BALLET, AND MORE

Ronnie Wood of the legendary rock group the Rolling Stones is partnering with Liberty of London, a Simon Doonan favorite. The rocker will create a range of men’s and women’s ready-to-wear bags and travel accessories with the British label.

When the line, called Ronnie Wood for Liberty of London, hits in the fall, shoppers can expect to see lots of lively clashing colors and vibrant prints. In fact, the line was inspired in part by some of Wood’s artwork, which is said to come through in the clashing nature of a number of the jersey batwing and racer-back dresses, cashmere scarves and graffiti-style T-shirts in the range that were designed by Liberty of London’s creative director Tamara Salman.

Wood said that he wanted to work with Liberty of London because of “the great tradition that Liberty has of artistic collaborations going back to the very early days when Liberty first opened.”

Wood isn’t the only one branching out. Karl Lagerfeld recently designed the tutu for The Dying Swan as part of English National Ballet’s ‘Ballets Russes’ season at Sadler’s Wells, and has now wrapped designing costumes for four principal dancers for the upcoming production of Apollo.

The house of Chanel, where Lagerfeld has been the creative director for over 20 years, has a close tie to the ballet. Coco Chanel was very good friends with Ballets Russes composer Igor Stravinsky and in 1929, the French icon designed the costumes for The Ballets de Monte Carlo. The costume redesign by Lagerfeld also marks the centenary of the first performance of Apollo by Serge de Diaghilev’s ballet at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

It is worth noting, however, that Lagerfeld does not like the term “update.” When discussing the costume revamp, he said that the costumes are “kind of timeless, a modern version of Greek mythology. Update isn’t a word I would use.”
