The British Fashion Council (BFC) announced on Friday that the London Fashion Week designers are boycotting fur on the catwalk for Spring 2019, according to its survey. The survey is part of the council’s initiative to educate designers on making more ethical and conscious choices in their design production.
BFC Chief Executive Caroline Rush told The Guardian that this endeavor “highlights a trend we have seen over the past few years, with more and more brands deciding to use alternative materials to fur.” Before the news of the survey broke, Burberry officially announced that it will no longer use fur for its clothing.
Apart from Burberry, other London designers — including Stella McCartney (natch) and Christopher Kane — have also sworn off fur and other unethical practices in furthering their design and brand.
Fortunately, the cruelty-free movement is not isolated to London. Teen Vogue reports, “[Going cruelty-free] indicates a larger trend in the industry as a whole as the world becomes more eco-conscious and educated on sustainability.” Michael Kors in New York and Gucci in Milan have also pledged to go cruelty-free, indicating that the movement is on its way to influence the entirety of the fashion industry.
