Memes: creative outlets, sources of laughter, banes of Drake’s existence and now, the reason why Demi Lovato is (at least temporarily) quitting Twitter and Instagram.
Following an incident last week in which Lovato offered up her two cents on an unkind Mariah Carey vs. Ariana Grande meme and roused the ire of Mariah’s fanbase, the Confident singer is calling the whole thing off and sticking to Snapchat (where she can be found @theddlovato), which, for all of its tactless filters, is free of @-replies.
Damn I gotta quit sayin shit. Bye Twitter

The meme in question featured a picture of a young Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande side by side, capped off by the text, “When you order it online vs. when it arrives,” implying Grande is a lesser version of a young Carey. Lovato countered with a “You got it the wrong way around honey” and all hell broke loose. After a barrage of angry comments from Mariah Carey’s fans, aka the Lambily, rocked Lovato’s social media, Lovato replied, “This is why I posted what I did. Jen keeps it classy but I’m not afraid to say shit. The woman is mean for no reason.” (Jen being Jennifer Lopez.)
“Extremely talented? Yes,” Lovato continued, speaking of the legendary Carey. “Superhuman? Possibly. Unnecessarily rude? Absolutely.”
Lovato went on to deride those who’d fixated on the meme drama rather than applauding her charitable work and recent campaign with Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health. (The singer-songwriter is living with bipolar disorder and is a passionate mental health advocate.)
That one time I started my own charity providing mental health care for people who can’t afford it and this is what y’all talk about

And people wonder what’s wrong with the world. Pay more attention to good than bad.
Mic drop. May the bridges Demi Lovato burns light the way for all of us who maintain an unhealthy, over-involved social media presence.
