Perfect Casting? Katy Perry Might Play Cher in the ‘Clueless’ Musical

Our teenage dreams are coming true. Clueless, the 1995 coming-of-age classic, is turning into a musical. And Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the movie, wants Katy Perry to play Cher Horowitz. We can’t think of a better casting for Cher than another California girl who looks spectacular in plaid and knee-high socks.

Heckerling told Vulture, “I love Katy Perry but you never know what will happen, she has a whole big schedule.” Would Katy Perry pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? As if! Perry already “expressed interest” in the role last year, Heckerling said earlier.

Since Clueless is a jukebox musical, it will feature classic pop songs instead of original music. Song numbers have yet to be disclosed but may we suggest “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and “Firework,” for the moment Cher realizes she’s in love with Josh?

Set to start previews in 2016, Clueless the musical is enlisting the movie’s original costume designer, Mona May. Expect the same classic plaid outfits, Alaia dresses (an A-what-A?) and knee-high socks we loved in the comedy.

Between the Clueless musical, Tommy Hilfiger’s throwback collection and Alanis Morissette’s remake of “Ironic,” the 90s teenager inside of us couldn’t be happier.
