It seems all anyone’s been able to talk about these past 24 hours is Caitlyn Jenner, who revealed her new (to us, at least) identity with a stunning Vanity Fair spread. With the exception of a few jerks, the response to her cover has been overwhelmingly positive and Caitlyn has been largely getting words of support for her bravery.
Cait’s mother, Esther Jenner, has come forward to comment on her daughter’s stunning spread, saying that Caitlyn has been much more relaxed and happy since the transformation. “I was there last week, well actually, I got home a week and a half ago. And I met Caitlyn. She is… so much more at ease,” she said. But Mama Esther says that calling her daughter by her new name is going to take a lot of getting used to and some time for her to accept. “I still have to call him Bruce. His father and I named him that,” she said. “It’s going to be a struggle for me to get used to the change, but happily so… I’m very happy for him – or her!”
We’ve heard reactions from much of the reality TV family on the cover, but Jenner’s stepson, Rob Kardashian, was reportedly in the dark that Caitlyn was posing for Vanity Fair . At last night’s CFDA Awards, Kim Kardashian recounted her brother’s reaction to Cait’s big reveal. Apparently, Rob was the only member of the family that didn’t know Jenner was doing the cover, so when she passed around an image of the cover via text, Rob was a little confused. “I sent it on a mass text to everybody and my brother was on it, and he goes, ‘Kim, why are you sending me this? Who is this woman and why do I care?'” Kim explained. “And I was like, ‘Rob, that’s Bruce – that’s Caitlyn.’ And he was like, ‘Oh my god, she’s beautiful.'”
Things seem to be off to a good start for Ms. Jenner, who is already receiving accolades for her fearlessness, coming out in such a public way. The former Olympian will be honored at this year’s ESPY Awards, where she will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award on June 15. And yeah, we’d say she definitely deserves it.
