Kate Lanphear Named Editor-in-Chief at…Maxim?

The jump from the ladymag to the ladmag seems like it would be like a big one, but Kate Lanphear, Style Director at T: The New York Times Style Magazine and former Style Director at ELLE is about to do it. The editrix has been announced as the new Editor-in-Chief of Maxim magazine.

The ladmag has tapped Lanphear in alleged attempts to class up the publication. When one thinks of Maxim, images of scantily clad women in wet T-shirts with their mouths agape come to mind. But according to WWD, the owner, Sardar Biglari, is looking for ways to elevate the magazine after declining sales.

Lanphear will make her debut with the March issue and says her goal, naturally, is to boost the magazine’s style quotient. “I hope to cultivate and broaden Maxim’s coverage of style and culture. It’s an exciting time for this boldly confident, unapologetic brand,” she told WWD.

Lanphear and Maxim may seem like an odd pairing, but when you think about it, Lanphear is used to being around a ton of naked women in her high fashion job, so it might not be such a stretch after all.
