Certain subreddits have become treasure troves of insights and reviews about our favorite beauty products. You won’t find sponsored posts touted by influencers or an allegiance to a particular line of products for the most part; this is skin care by the people, for the people, cutting through the marketing claims and branding to find out what really works on a trial basis. While opinions should still be taken with a grain of salt (everyone’s skin is different, after all), some tips and tricks may be worth considering — especially when they come with before and after pictures. Avoid fatty alcohols in moisturizers
If you notice you’re breaking out with almost every moisturizer no matter how "gentle" it claims to be, consider avoiding fatty alcohols. Reddit member u/plsporo shared that she tried lots of moisturizers, but all gave her ugly red bumps on her skin. She decided to try a moisturizer without fatty alcohols, such as Sebamed Clear Face Care Gel ($14.95), and it was buh-bye, bumps. Other recommendations include Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream ($19.99) and Dr. Lin Skincare Daily Hydrating Gel ($29.99).

Keep your hands moisturized with these skin-saving treatments
Extreme cold temperatures can be harsh on our hands no matter how often we're slathering up with lotion. After u/BWJackal asked for tips to keep hands moisturized, other Redditors chimed in. Member u/SweetTeaBags recommended O'Keeffe's Working Hands Hand Cream ($5.89), while u/democraticwhre suggested using Vaseline or Aquaphor ($4.79). Drinking loads of water also helps.

Increase your water intake for healthier skin
Skin is the largest organ and it is affected by the nutrients we give our body. Member u/cocainablanco asked about other ways to take care of our skin besides using skin care products, and regularly drinking water was the top answer. It’s not enough to drink just a glass — for many, three or four liters made the difference in their skin texture. Changing pillowcases is another Reddit rule of skin care. Indeed, it wouldn’t make sense to have a multistep routine layered on your face and then rest it on a dirty pillowcase.

Redditors with similar experiences shared useful advice — like u/carmen2211, who said the irritation and swelling will go away on its own, but it’s important to keep the area clean and not touch it. To prevent ingrown hairs in the future, she recommends sugar waxing. There are plenty of DIY recipes, or you can easily purchase an at-home wax like Parissa Hot Wax ($10).
