The old rule states it takes three to make a trend. One is just an idea, two of something is twinning, but three equals a bona fide movement. When it came to the makeup looks at the Spring 2018 shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris, there were some clear breakout trends.
This season, it was obvious that the main focus was on the eyes, a trend we also noted at the Fall 2017 shows . Makeup artists enhanced eyes with everything from bold swipes of shadow to intentionally clumped mascara to glittering diamantés and, of course, countless creative ways to wear eyeliner . When not focusing on the eyes, it was all about lips, especially red lips.

7 Bold Makeup Trends From the Spring 2018 Runways to Try
Fancy Flicks
Take a more minimalist approach to eyeliner with the thinnest of dashes on the outer corners of eyes. The understated look was seen at Jil Sander with glowing skin and not much else.
Fancy Flicks
Can you see it? Skinny black eyeliner at Oscar de la Renta was accented with a contrasting flick on the outer corners of eyes. A pretty white tick is shown here, but makeup artists also used brown and yellow lines to enhance the outside of the eye.
Fancy Flicks
Diamantés were a favorite tool of makeup artists for Spring 2018, but the straw wins for most unconventional applicator. Makeup artist Karim Rahman used the curved part of a straw to create this textured liner look at Lanvin.
Fancy Flicks
The Tom Ford Spring 2018 show had a twist on the popular black eye and neutral lip look with fat, rounded flicks and a barely-there lip color.
Fancy Flicks
It's not a flick or even a tick, it's a dab. Makeup artist Yadim made the eyes the focus at Jason Wu with a thick, black brushstroke applied only to the outer corners of eyes.
Clumpy Lashes
Christian Siriano's multicolored nails provided some fresh nail art inspiration , but the imperfectly perfect clumpy mascara is something we're also keen to try.
Clumpy Lashes
Cushnie et Ochs will single-handedly convince everyone that clumpy mascara can be pretty and flattering. Models donned a no-makeup makeup look with some slight clumping on the top and bottom lashes.
Clumpy Lashes
Manish Arora had a bit of help achieving a clumpy lash look from falsies. Thick individual lashes were sporadically applied across the lower lash line over top of shimmering green and pale blue eyeshadows.
Clumpy Lashes
It was all about the lashes at Christian Dior. Makeup artist Peter Philips applied multiple coats of mascara, clumping lashes together to create a soft, spiky look.
Perimeter Liner
While some shows focused on flicks, eyeliner that went around the full eye was also a popular look. At Marc Jacobs, black liquid liner was applied around the entire perimeter of the eye and flicked out at both corners.
Perimeter Liner
Roberto Cavalli added some edge to a no-makeup makeup look with black eyeliner rimming the full eye. Notice the way the line starts off thinner on the inside part of the lid and gets thicker as it goes toward the outer corners.
Perimeter Liner
Get a cat eye and a full liner look in one with Versus Versace's take on perimeter eyeliner. The black liner was drawn on thicker on the top lash line and pointed out at the corners, creating a badass finish.
Perimeter Liner
Makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench kicked the inky black eyeliner at Ashish up a notch by topping it with a dusting of black sparkles.
Perimeter Liner
Glossy peach lips contrasted the thick liquid eyeliner at Moschino. The full liner was flicked out as per usual at the outer corners, but flicked down on the inside.
Embellished Eyes
Carmen Marc Valvo went for embellishment this season with hair beads and shimmering eyes. Chunky blue glitter was applied to the eyelids for a pretty mermaid look without the scales.
Embellished Eyes
After admiring the glitter-dipped fingers and hot pink nails at Jeremy Scott, check out the eyes. Diamantés were applied under the eyes for some surprise shine.
Embellished Eyes
Stella Jean's ethereal makeup will please glitter fans. The cascade of sparkles sprinkled down from the brows like prismatic falling snow.
Embellished Eyes
Put down the eyeliner and enhance eyes by lining them with diamantés a la Dries Van Noten. Glitter is great, but the little gems circling the eyes create a unique futuristic look.
Red, Red Lips
The bright red pouts at Badgley Mischka matched the bold clothes and those gorgeous flower earrings. Color was left off the rest of the face so the lips remained the focus.
Red, Red Lips
The millennial pink logomania nails at Helmut Lang were a fun touch, but so was the burgundy and red ombre lip paired with the color-free eye.
Red, Red Lips
The jeweled headbands at Dolce & Gabbana were gorgeous, but they didn't quite distract from the bright red lipstick. The bold lip was accented with a black cat eye for a classic Italian film star vibe.
Red, Red Lips
Blumarine accented glowing skin and groomed brows with a slick of cherry red lipstick. It's polished, but not fussy, making it the perfect day look.
Rainbow Bright Eyes
The royal blue eyeshadow may have been concentrated on the lids at Tracy Reese, but it still had plenty of drama. Tempting as it may be, leave off mascara.
Rainbow Bright Eyes
Never one to shy away from color, House of Holland ensured the makeup matched the punchy clothes with bold smudges of tangerine and sky blue applied over the entire eye area.
Rainbow Bright Eyes
Marni brought blue eyeshadow into this decade with a striking cobalt blue shade accenting eyes. Other models wore sky blue and emerald green swiped across their lids in thick, elongated strokes.
Rainbow Bright Eyes
Why have one statement shade when you can have two? The eyes at Tadashi Shoji were played up with a sea green eyeshadow on the lids and a vivid turquoise liner on the waterline. The mermaid look was finished with a glossy nude lip.
Rainbow Bright Eyes
Roksanda demonstrated that you can have green eyes and not be a monster with this beautiful emerald eyeshadow. The jewel tone theme continued to nails and clothes.
Anything Goes Eyeliner
Grab a couple of different colored eyeliners and get doodling to recreate the makeup look at Ashley Williams. There was a clear floating flick, but it was enhanced with dashes here and there.
Anything Goes Eyeliner
The Woodstock-esque flowers painted on models' cheeks at Anna Sui were the first thing to grab our attention, but then we noticed the slashes of silver running down the eyes. It's surprisingly subtle. Plus, it's a more unique way to highlight the eye than a light shadow on the inner corners.
Anything Goes Eyeliner
Yohji Yamamoto showed that eyeliner doesn't even need to stay on the eye area. Messy black strokes were drawn from the outer corner of the eye to the hairline.
Anything Goes Eyeliner
Forget all the rules about eyeliner being applied in a perfectly straight line. At Eudon Choi, makeup artist Adam De Cruz applied dynamic swirling liner to eyes starting at the inside crease and extending out past the outer corner.
Anything Goes Eyeliner
Take that eyeliner up and out with a graphic shape like the one at Rochas. A sharp semicircle shape was applied with black liner beginning at the inside corner, extending around the crease and finishing on the other side.
